School board members are considering changing Banks Road Elementary, Salem Elementary and Salem Middle School to a traditional calendar in the 2018-19 school year.

They also are considering changing Alston Ridge Elementary to a traditional calendar starting in the 2019-20 school year. Under the current proposal, Alston Ridge Middle would open that year on a traditional calendar.

No other changes to multi-track calendar schools are under consideration at this time.

Board members discussed staff’s proposal at an April 4 work session.

They will discuss it again on April 18 at a board work session.

Why is this happening?

Some multi-track year-round schools are under-enrolled. District-wide, there is less overall demand from parents for year-round schools.

The board and staff are considering changes to address the imbalance in demand and make more efficient use of all of our facilities.

Banks Road Elementary, Salem Elementary and Salem Middle are significantly under-enrolled.

Banks Road currently has 418 unused seats. Salem Elementary has 191 available seats. Salem Middle has 143.

Will I be affected?

The proposed calendar changes at three of the schools would not go into effect until the 2018-19 school year, so current 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th graders would not be affected under the current proposal.

Current 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Alston Ridge Elementary would not be affected by the current proposal.

The proposed calendar changes, if approved, may affect feeder patterns. Those will be discussed during the 2018-19 enrollment proposal this fall.

Topics

Parents,

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

Banks Road Elementary School

  1. It seems that Banks Road Elementary will fill in with the new neighborhoods being built around here.  We live off Fanny Brown Rd and homes are going up like crazy!
The base attendance area for Banks Road Elementary is growing but will continue to have available seats, as you can see in the table. Note: This table does not reflect families who may choose to go to a year-round school in the future.

  1. I am interested to hear about the feeder pattern proposed for middle school, as currently traditional middle school options in our area are slim.
Banks Road Elementary base families currently feed to Fuquay Varina Middle, Holly Grove Middle, and West Lake Middle. If Banks Road converts to a traditional calendar school, families who are base assigned to Holly Grove or West Lake will be given a traditional calendar middle school to which they may apply. There are currently available seats at Fuquay Varina Middle.

  2. When will another middle school be built in our area?
There is a new middle school planned for this area, currently called M14, which could open as early as 2022. It likely would open on a traditional calendar.

  3. I am confused why we as taxpayers voted on a referendum to build more schools in Wake County...to expand capacity.  Now there is a situation where the board is changing schedules in order to maximize utilization of schools that are not at capacity.
The majority of our multi-track elementary and middle schools are under capacity.  Having available seats but not being able to use them because they are at a multi-track calendar school is problematic.  Across the county, there is greater demand for traditional calendar seats than there is for year-round calendar seats.  Having an under-utilized multi-track school brings with it the need for additional resources to ensure that all tracks are equitable.  If the multi-track school was fully utilized, no additional resources would be needed.

Salem Elementary School

  1. If we really want to save money as a county, we should be converting MORE schools to YR instead of asking for tax increases to build 14 new schools.
The current building plan allows for all new schools to open as traditional calendar schools.  We are making these recommendations because many of our current year-round calendar schools are under enrolled. The traditional calendar is more popular than the multi-track year-round calendar.

  2. If Salem Schools are switched to traditional, there's no guarantee they will be your base schools.
We have no plans to reduce the base attendance area of any of the schools we are recommending to change to a traditional calendar.

  1. Wouldn’t the best solution be to have a year-round high school option?
Operating a multi-track year-round high school is cost prohibitive. Each track would have to have the same offerings as any comprehensive high school. We currently operate a high school on the modified calendar. This calendar matches the track 4 calendar for one semester and the track 1 calendar for the other semester.  While we offer this high school calendar, very few families choose this high school to match the calendar of their K-8 siblings.

  2. There is a huge housing development being built within walking distance of SES!  Won’t the school fill with growth?
The base attendance area for Salem Elementary is growing, but the school will continue to have available seats, as you can see in the table below. This table does not reflect families who may choose to go to a year-round school once Salem is converted to a traditional calendar.

Salem Middle School

  1. Salem Middle will be over capacity immediately if switched to a traditional calendar. This change would not even take into consideration the Middleton neighborhood being built directly behind the schools.
All students who are impacted by these changes will be eligible to grandfather.  Any changes in capacities at the schools involved will happen slowly, over time.  The base attendance area for Salem Middle School is growing a little. This table does not reflect families who may choose to go to a year-round school in the future. Families who wish to remain on the year-round calendar will impact these numbers.

  1. What happens to the neighborhoods that are currently assigned to SMS and also to Laurel Park Elem and Turner Creek Elem as our base schools? If the calendar is changed, would these kids still be assigned to Salem Middle or our neighborhoods possibly reassigned to the next closest YR middle?
The base middle school assignment will not change.  We will name a multi-track calendar middle school as an application school for those families who want to continue on the year-round calendar in middle school.

  2. Is it at all possible to consider opening a High School as a Year Round with just Track 4?
We currently operate a high school on the modified calendar.  This calendar matches the track 4 calendar for one semester and the track 1 calendar for the other semester.  While we offer this high school calendar, very few families choose this high school to match the calendar of their K-8 siblings.
