To keep up with projected growth in some parts of the county and prevent the overcrowding of schools, we’re opening three new schools:
- Apex Friendship Elementary, 801 Humie Olive Road, Apex, opening in August 2022
- Barton Pond Elementary, 12004 Strickland Road, Raleigh, opening August 2022
- Herbert Akins Road Middle, 2255 Herbert Akins Road, Fuquay-Varina, opening July 2022
Other parts of the proposal are aimed at relieving some overcrowded schools, increasing the base attendance areas at under-utilized schools, and improving transportation efficiency.
Some students affected by this proposal will be able to submit a stability transfer and remain at their current school. Review the stability rules.

We were hoping to be in this change from pleasant grove to leesville elementary. We were in the change from middle and high to leesville (we are beside Umstead forest) and were happy about that. We currently have 9 elementary schools closer to us than pleasant grove (including Barton’s pond that will open) and leesville is less than 1.5 miles away from us and is the closest. Hilburn next right at 1.5 miles. I know leesville has been over crowded for awhile but was hoping with reshuffling we may be included in that for proximity and consistency.

There has been some discussion in our neighborhood about the changes. I wanted to post comments here so they could be seen.
Our neighborhood used to be zoned to leesville. After it switched, people were not happy and kids went in all different directions because of a variety of reasons, one being proximity. There are only a handful of kids who go to pleasant grove now but there are many more that would be entering elementary school in the next few years. The neighborhood very much wants to have a “neighborhood school” where most of the kids would go to. Please consider putting our neighborhood (the same section that moved to Leesville middle and high from right beside Umstead) to leesville elementary. According to the presentation, Leesville elementary would be at 78% utilization and pleasant grove would be at 100% with the current draft 1 proposal. This would help level out those numbers and give kids a neighborhood school(s) and give them a consistent feeder pattern with their peers.
