The Wake County Board of Education on Tuesday discussed school calendars for the 2020-21 school year based on new legislation approved by lawmakers in late April. Watch the discussion.

They are expected to vote on the calendars on June 2.

Apart from year-round calendars, these proposed calendars would be similar to those previously approved by the school board, including the same Winter and Spring breaks. Calendars had to be adjusted to include the five days of remote learning mandated by recent state law.

We will notify you again when calendars have been officially approved by the board.

We invite you to share feedback and questions about the proposed calendars in the thread that applies to you and your child.

Calendars for Early College schools are still being finalized in coordination with their university partners, though we expect they will be similar to calendars previously approved by the school board.

We will provide updates as soon as we have them.

• We must add 5 Remote Learning (RL) days to all calendars.

• We must meet a minimum of 1,025 instructional hours in a year that includes the 5 Remote Learning days.

• We must add 5 individually separate and distinct full in-person instructional days that we are referring as Session Law days.

Please share feedback and questions about the Early College calendars below.

These calendars already start in early August. I hope you will add the SL days somewhere on or after the originally scheduled start date so as not to start school any earlier. I would prefer minutes added to the day by if additional days need to be added the last week of May but still ending school before Memorial Day would be better than adding them in July or earlier in August since families are less likely to have made plans a year out than two months from now.

Early College calendars should align with their partnership college. Some colleges have moved up their dates to be finished at Thanksgiving--is that a consideration for early colleges? However starting school in July will be difficult--hoping the start day stays the same and the other days are added. Early College calendars are different than traditional calendars----If Early College teachers have children on the elementary and middle level, will they be able to complete their workday at home and assist their children with remote learning? How will it work for educators that have children on different calendars, especially if staggering children are up for consideration---would those educators be able to complete remote learning at home with their children that are on a staggering schedule?

Hi there. Matt Dees with WCPSS Communications. To your first question, we are in the process of working with our partner colleges to align schedules. Will get back to you on your other questions.

Also consider adding the RL days in the late part of December and May once the college exams are finished or during the college fall break so as not to interfere with college schedules. Convert some of 10/2, 10/6, 12/21, 12/22, 5/13, 5/24 workdays to RL.

I just saw the proposed WLA calendar on the board docs. While I don’t agree with starting the school year earlier, why not designate the first 5 days as SL days like you did on the other calendars? Also adding Dec 21 as a SL day doesn’t make sense - why would you schedule the kids to come back for one day on a Monday at the beginning of winter break? I would prefer Dec be made a RL/W day and one of the earlier RL/W days be made an in person day. Would have preferred any days added be done the week of 5/24 -5/28 - that would still wrap up the school year before Memorial Day.

Can you post a link to the proposed calendar here under the main topic information. It looks like it will be presented at the work session this afternoon and voted on tonight. That doesn’t give us much time to review and comment. https://assistive.eboardsolutions.com/meetings/TempFolder/Meetings/20-21%20WLA%20RL_219559srhe1di3qq3ns0u3uhoo5axd.pdf
